Privacy

The Process Lab and ChE Lab record performance data for all users; both visitors and students enrolled in Widener courses. Information about a student's performance is used as a portion of that student's grade in several courses.  Statistical summaries of data about user performance (for instance, the average time to complete a module) may be published as part of the ongoing development of web-based instructional media (see my site for a list of recent publications). In NO INSTANCE will any individual's name be used in such publications nor will individual names or EMAIL addresses be distributed, except as may be required by law and the policies of Widener University. Visitors names are not solicited or recorded.

Hacking

The data about class performance is part of the grade record for classes. Attempts to alter or falsify the content of that record, or to allow others to use a student's password, constitutes academic fraud, as described in the Widener University Student Handbook and will be treated as such.

Attempts to "hijack" portions of this site to reload on to another site are expressly forbidden.  The contents of this site are protected by United States copyright.

Visitors and outside use of OWL

Visitors are welcome to visit this site and run the interactive modules in the open portions of it.  However, I will not allow others to copy the contents of OWL to their own sites. The reason is very practical.  With the creation of version 2.0 on 7/19/1 the IP of this server became hard coded into all the module.  That practice has continued up to the current version which includes course management software for online courses.  The server software for OWL is written for a Windows 2000 server using ASP.

I prefer to make this site available to all as long as that is possible (meaning as long as visitors' use does not interfere with Widener's use of the server) rather than distribute the code, modules and/or server software. Because of the capacity of our server and the fact that the interactive modules are JAVA applets running client side, I anticipate that the server can accommodate all the visitors OWL is likely to get. This policy means that I have to upgrade only one image of the site when I fix bugs or improve the site. This way, I can ensure that the site that you see is both of high quality and up to date.
